SOUNDCREAM LIGHT | SERVING SEVENTEEN.

SoundCream Light is a bubbly, bright mixture of house, tech house, nudisco, grooves and tunes.

Music for Sundays, 2p-10p.

Serving Seventeen of SoundCream Light is for Pride. This Pride season, let us prioritize organizations that protect trans folx near and far. I would especially highlight the incredible work of Iman Le Caire and Jean-Manuel Pourquet and their team at Trans Asylias, which helps persecuted transgender asylum seekers relocate to safer countries. As you are making Pride party purchases this month, please consider a donation of any amount to this fantastic organization.

I have a few highlights from this set to share. The opening words are from none other than transgender activist and key figure in the gay liberation movement, Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson. Her spoken word performance of, “Soul,” written by Jimmy Camicia for their drag group, The Hot Peaches, goes as follows:

You can count your karma, If Nirvana is your goal
You can shake and you can rattle, You can rock and roll
You can be a Clark Kent, Or a Lois, Or an Alice down a hole
You can be a vampire on a mountain, With a heart of stone black coal.

You can be a leather angel, On a sleek black Harley bike
Or a redhead screaming faggot or a dazzling d*ke
You can lock yourself in a closet, In a fine mink stole
But it really doesn’t matter, If you ain’t got soul.

I thought it fitting that this would pair with the first track, “Baddy On The Floor,” the latest work from Honey Dijon with Jamie xx, released on April 15. The other freshest track you will hear is, “Happier,” from Blessed Madonna, featuring Clementine Douglas. The full set should sound like a progression in queer dance music throughout the decades as a reminder that Pride is a time to respect our history.

The final track, “Dreamer,” released by Livin’ Joy in 1997, is dedicated to David and Fred of Nasty Pig as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their global fashion brand. David recently shared that this song was a highlight he recalls from their days dancing at Sound Factory, which is where Nasty Pig got its original start selling club-wear. Their work in the community has been a huge inspiration for me, and this song also speaks so much to me as well. Here’s to the Dreamers. Enjoy.
