SOUNDCREAM | TWELFTH SERVING.
SoundCream by DavidXDaisy is a bubbly mixture of house, tech house, grooves, and tunes to move you.
Music for Sundays, 7a - 7p.
The Twelfth Serving of SoundCream is for Pride. It is for celebration and commemoration. It is for lifting each other up and inspiring Hope for those that follow in our footsteps. It is for remembering that no matter what adversities we may face time and time again, the sun keeps on rising.
To introduce this Pride set, I’ve included the words of Harvey Milk’s 1997 Hope Speech. Here is the full excerpt from the version you will hear:
'Somewhere in Des Moines or San Antonio there is a young gay person who all of a sudden realizes that he or she is gay; knows that if their parents find out they will be tossed out of the house, their classmates will taunt the child, and the Anita Bryant's and John Briggs' are doing their part on TV.
And that child has several options: staying in the closet, and suicide. And then one day that child might open the paper that says "Homosexual elected in San Francisco" and there are two new options: the option is to go to California, or stay in San Antonio and fight. Two days after I was elected I got a phone call and the voice was quite young. It was from Altoona, Pennsylvania. And the person said "Thanks".
And you've got to elect gay people; so that thousands upon thousands like that child know that there is hope for a better world; there is hope for a better tomorrow. Without hope, not only gays, but those who are blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us's; without hope the us's give up.
I know that you can't live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you, and you, and you, and you have got to give them hope.'
Thank you very much. - Harvey Milk
In this set, you will of course hear the iconic Pepper Mashay delivering Dive in the Pool. I couldn’t do my first Pride set without a callback to Queer as Folk. Pepper is making her rounds this summer now that she is able to do her 20th Anniversary Tour of Dive in the Pool, and may be coming to a Pride near you.
You will also hear Catch the Beat by Cakes da Killa and Honey Dijon as my reference to Honey’s set for Boiler Room Sugar Mountain, which is REQUIRED reading and should be at the very top of your list for Pride. If you have never heard it, please skip mine and go straight to hers. Now. I also want to note the new track by Siwell, La Fiesta, which is a complete banger that I cannot wait to play on a proper system.
Early in the set, you absolutely will hear one of the most formative songs of my life, Wannabe, by Spice Girls. I was a Spice Girls fanatic. I was a silly little gay boy that would put on full productions of Spice Girls hits in front of the entire community center summer camp situation. The counselors would see me giving showz and thought it might be a hoot to put on a concert of Spice Girls hits featuring my gay ass as none other than Baby Spice. She was my fantasy. Add Rocky Horror and a healthy splash of the The Birdcage, and you’ve got a Daisy. And yes, I served. So here’s to all the limp-wristed silly kids that don’t fit in and will most certainly find their way if only we leave a light.
As always, I’ve got the full set list here if there is anything that moves you. Share some music you love with people you love this month.
