Serving TwentyThree of SoundCream is for the Power of Memory. Memory connects us to people and places we have not seen for so long, and reminds us that they are still part of who we are though far they may seem. Memory of the people our family were to us as children helps us face the people we have learned them to be as adults. Memory of long nights enveloped by the music and lights of a dance floor are what we hold dear when we are left alone in the dark. It is when Memory begins to decline that we begin to lose loved ones and it is up to our own Memory to hold strong who they were and still are as long as we remember. Memory is our only guide through a life with no road map, making our mistakes a trustworthy almanac of trial and error as we strive for every destination.
One of my greatest gifts in this life is memory. I’ve always had a distinct ability to recall information and events with full sensory details. Conversely, I have absolutely no talent for names and faces of people, which is a fine price to pay as easily as those come and go. I coasted through my education without developing any study habits. It was all memory. We understand so little about what memory really is even though it is the most real thing we know other than each fleeting moment we experience only to then become part of memory. Do you remember?
Recently, I have been considering how we honor memory in real-time. We’ve been going through my grandfather’s belongings since he passed more than seven years ago. We never connected much, but I have found some items of interest in his wardrobe that resonate with me. I have taken to styling them for events as I imagine his equal horror and amusement at what his grandson has made of this life. I think they always envisioned me as a business executive on the golf course, but really aren’t I doing the same thing every after hours? This month’s art pulls colors from one of his jackets festooned with lovely, bright pins and has been receiving some rather envious looks on the sidewalk.
The freshest ID of this serving comes from Cassian, Matt Ryder with “A Feeling I Miss,” released on Oct. 31 with TSZR. At the end of the mix comes a rework by Cassian with YOTTO on Da Hool’s iconic “Love Parade,” which reminds me of a fateful night at Cielo in Meatpacking. Another artist’s version of “Love Parade” came on and sent me into full form. A gentleman on the dance floor next to me noted that my response indicated I must have good taste in music. That small moment became a cornerstone in my understanding that I no longer was enjoying my entrance into dance music, but building an opinion of it, leading me to this library of sound I now share with you confidently.
I’m proud to include two fierce tracks from the NYC scene: Michael Cignarale’s “Turn My Body Out” from this summer and “Leviathan” by Johnny I., released Oct. 10 with HoTL Records. Major love to Hilit Kolet and The Illustrious Blacks as a major meeting of the minds for “Transatlantic Kiki,” remixed here by Floorplan. Enjoy.
