SUPERSOUNDCREAM QUATRE.

SuperSoundCream is a Harder & Stronger Mixture of House, Tech House, and Techno.

Music for Saturday Nights.

SuperSoundCream Quatre is for Peter Rauhofer.

I was recently asked to deliver a featured set at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, known as Fat Stack Tuesday. It is a community building event by Slinger Entertainment to allow DJs to hear their selections or new productions on the phenomenal system known as the Murda One Sound System, which was custom built by SaMacca Sounds. Sam’s diligent audiophile work on this system made me more aware of the sound system culture in dance music and its recent worldwide resurgence. When Sam offered me a night to contribute a featured set to Fat Stack, I initially declined as I am not currently accepting gigs in the market where I live as I do not feel my sound resonates with its audience. I have also been pondering lately that I wish I had the opportunity to play the music that moves me without restraint. As I sat in the airport considering his message, I realized this may have been exactly what I asked for. An hour later, I asked him to let me play a music education set that featured works only by Peter Rauhofer. He agreed and I got to work.

Last summer, I had an incredibly special night when Masterbeat presented the Work! party tribute to Peter Rauhofer along with the Rauhofer Estate at Terminal 5 during NYC Pride weekend. I knew prior to the event that I admired his work and it was central to my musical tastes; however, I did not understand the full extent of his impression on me until I had walked out of the venue down West 56th Street, reflecting on the full catalog of his work.

Since my inception in the dance music world a decade ago, I could easily mark my two greatest sonic inspirations, both as dancer and now DJ, as Vicki Powell and Peter Napoli. Vicki represents my Southern gospel side with queer energy, and Peter Napoli represents my mystic journey side that reflects the history of house music. However, I believe in the Power of Three and have never realized nor established that third Saint in my music education until that night at Terminal 5. My work on the decks has provided me an opportunity to dive so far into the music that moves me that I now see what Peter Rauhofer gave us prior to his passing. It is a legacy that resonates throughout our global dance scene and inspired a generation of artists that came, are here, and have yet to arrive.

I can now definitively identify my three formative inspirations as Vicki, Peter, and Peter. Peter Rauhofer’s work represents my dark, clubby side that is so instrisic to what completes DavidXDaisy. To accept and own the power over your darkness is to know harmony in your spirit. To ignore and refuse to recognize it only hinders your potential for growth.

To mark another lap around the sun on the decks and in life, I have selected thirty-five tracks produced or remixed by Peter Rauhofer, recorded on four decks for my fourth and last edition of SuperSoundCream. Each SuperSoundCream has been an annual opportunity to challenge myself in my skills as I grow my expression as a DJ. I initially thought this fourth edition would put too much pressure on me to do properly and worth little to the few people who might listen, but that night at Fat Stack Tuesday by Slinger Entertainment and its positive response from folx in Alabama who had never heard his name made me realize that this was part of my mission to share important music that moves me. Below is the short history of Peter Rauhofer that I wrote and shared with the audience on printed slips during this Pride edition of Fat Stack. Enjoy.

Tonight’s feature set is a showcase of the original productions and remixes of legendary DJ/Producer, Peter Rauhofer. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1965, Rauhofer began building his career in New York City clubs in the 90s under monikers Club 69 and Size Queen before going on to launch his infamous record label, Star 69.

Peter Rauhofer is credited with shaping the gay club and big room sound of the 2000s, particularly for his iconic Work! parties at Stereo and residence at Roxy. He was a regular remixer for Madonna, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Christina Aquilera, and Mariah Carey as well as many other top artists of the time. At the close of this set, you will hear one of the variations of his remix for Cher’s “Believe,” for which he was awarded the Grammy for Remixer of the Year in 2000.

In April 2013, Rauhofer was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Weeks later, on May 7, 2013, he passed away at the age of 48. The devastating loss of this visionary was felt across the world. Rauhofer productions forever remain a staple in Pride celebrations and his legacy continues to resonate throughout the global dance community across genres. He is frequently imitated, but never duplicated. The only way to do it is to do it properly. Thank you for letting me share with you a taste of the Work of Peter Rauhofer.
